Your Bids Help Student Scholars Such as Enche Tjin
Thank you for participating in the Community College of Philadelphia Foundation's 2nd Annual Online Auction. Your bids will benefit student scholars like Enche Tjin with scholarships and programs. Tjin is a Business major at the College, who expects to transfer to Temple University in the Fall.
In his native land of Indonesia, Tjin was a visual communication design student, but dropped out in his third year, when he felt unchallenged and unconvinced that there was much value to his education there.
Emigration leads to work and study
"In 2003, I had a chance to emigrate to the United States. Honestly, I was not here to study; I came here to work. I worked in a restaurant, 14 hours a day, and seven days a week," Tjin said. "In three months I decided that this was not the life I wanted. I worked for two more months and decided to study in Community College of Philadelphia. That decision changed my life forever."
As an international student, Tjin was ineligible for financial aid, and required to pay the higher out-of-state tuition rate. "I lived on my savings and almost ran out of money the first year of school," said Tjin. "At that time I was invited to apply for the Edward Anderson Scholarship for an outstanding business student. Over the summer, I was caring for a sick cousin in Tennessee when I was notified that I was one of the finalists and would have to attend an interview the following week. I almost declined to come, but at the last minute my cousin insisted that I go to the interview. I took an 18-hour bus trip and came to the interview. Fortunately, I won the scholarship."
Scholarships make all the difference
Tjin also received a Foundation Scholars Award. "This scholarship helped me tremendously with my finances in the last semester of my associate degree. I think I would not have made it without the help of these scholarship funds," Tjin said.
"Throughout these years, I have had many great experiences and gained so much knowledge from my professors and fellow classmates. I am thankful everyday for the Foundation Board and scholarship committees who trusted me to receive these scholarships. I pray for the Foundation Board members so that they can raise more funds in the future to help many other hard working and talented students pursue their dreams and goals in their lives," said Tjin.
