Item Description
"The 1996 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa (91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet
Franc, .5% Merlot, and 1.5% Petit Verdot) has a dark ruby/plum color
and a gorgeous, complex nose of cedar, spice box, cherries, jammy plums and cassis. The wine is fleshy, medium to full-bodied, seductive, and filled with glycerin. The finish is all silk. This low acid, big,
spicy, lavishly wooded, chewy wine should drink well for another 10-14 years." Wine Advocate #132 (Dec 2000) Vintage Description (from vintner): The 1996 season started out early and continued so all the way to harvest. The winter of 1995/1996 was one of the warmest on record. Consequently, budbreak was about two
weeks early. Bloom and verasion were one to two weeks early, depending on the vineyard. 1996 will also be remembered as a low crop year. This was caused by three climatic events. First, the cool, wet spring of
1995 gave low bud fruitfulness (the cluster initials are formed in the buds the previous spring). Second, rain in May of 1996 affected bloom in many vineyards. Finally, a fierce heat spell in July caused considerable sunburn and crop loss in some vineyards. Cabernet Sauvignon, due to its late bloom date was the least affected variety and at Silver Oak our final tonnage was 97% of our projections. Winemaker's Tasting Notes: The 1996 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a garnet color. It has a nose of violets, blackberry, roasted grain and sandalwood. This wine is very complex and elegant with an extremely long finish of blackberry fruit, cinnamon and brown sugar. It will continue to improve until 2021 with proper cellaring. Composition: 91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, 1.5% Petit Verdot, 0.5% Merlot
