Item Description

Sweetgrass baskets of South Carolina are a proud tradition and investment. In continuous production since the 18th century, Lowcountry coil basketry is one of the oldest crafts of African origin in America. Today, the baskets are purchases by museums and art collectors throughout the world. Grasses used in the baskets are from swamps and marsh areas; water will not hurt them. A serious problem confronting the basketmakers is the dramatic decline in sweetgrass materials due to increased development of coastal islands and marshlands -- resulting in an increased value for each basket made.
