Item Description
Karel Appel, Dutch artist (1921-2006) was known best as a founding member of the COBRA art movement, known for the spontaneous expressionist style that characterized the work of its members. He studied at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam, and his work clearly was influenced by Picasso, Matisse and Dubuffet.
In 1949 he completed a fresco for the cafeteria of the city hall in Amsterdam, which created such controversy that it was covered for ten years. He has had major solo exhibitions of his work in many cities in Europe and the Americas, and he is routinely considered among the 20th century masters of abstract art.
This delightful lithograph, “Ghost,” was printed in 1979, numbered 44 of a limited edition of 130, and framed superbly by Vern Stein. This spectacular piece has been generously donated by art collectors UB President and Mrs. John B. Simpson and was previously a valued piece of their personal art collection.
