Item Description

ILEE KAPLANRose, 24” x 24” x 6”Woodblock print on fabric, acrylic paint

The Pillow Project was inspired by a class local artist Ilee Kaplan (Director of the CSULB University Art Museum) took examining Jewish mystical dream interpretation.  It was also motivated by her continuing interest in expanding the possibilities of the woodblock print media. The images, printed on fabric, are all portraits of people sleeping on pillows.  The portraits are made into actual pillows.

Kaplan invited her friends and acquaintances to be models.  The model for this pillow is Rose, an arts administrator who used to live in Long Beach.

According to Jewish mysticism, dreams are 1/60th of death.  Each night the soul, at a deep, unconscious level, examines and evaluates the day’s activities—as one day after the body returns to the earth, the soul will examine its entire life.  This daily assessment is communicated to the sleeper through the night’s allotment of dreams.  Through an exploration of one’s own dreams and dream symbols, each person learns to interpret the messages and advice emanating from this profound place. As Rabbi Hisda said in the Talmud, “An uninterpreted dream is like an unread letter.”

The dream has a power of its own, and the dreamer need not know it.  Everything that happens in the world is contained in a dream, announced by a message.  All is first declared in the heavens, extending from there into the world—expressed there in a message.
