Sotheby's first sale of books in London by founder Sam Baker in 1744, has led to what is now the largest auction house in the world with over 100 offices. The auction house now covers all areas of fine and decorative arts as well as specialty properties worldwide. In 1998, Sotheby's sales were in excess of 2 Billion dollars. In the 1990's, the New York offices were extensively renovated with the addition of six floors to allow specialty office and exhibit space under one roof. The tenth floor space has been called "one of the great dramatic exhibition spaces of New York...an environment to rival almost any of the city's museums." The high bidder and their 9 fortunate guests may view such exhibits as Photographs and Arcade Jewels of which the sale is soon take place.
