Item Description
From their divine hands comes a work of art. In art class, the third-grade boys studied illuminated manuscripts (manuscripts in which the text is supplemented by the addition of decoration). After viewing pages from the Book of Kells, each boy developed a word and concept to "send into the universe." They created lovely illuminated letters expressing such hopeful concepts as Peace or Hope. A wonderfully personal way to communicate with friends and loved ones--how could you live without a set of these beautiful works of art?
The Book of Kells is an ornately illustrated manuscript produced by Celtic monks around AD 800 in the style known as Insular art. It is one of the more lavishly illuminated manuscripts to survive from the Middle Ages and has been described as the zenith of Western calligraphy and illumination. It contains the four gospels of the Bible in Latin, along with prefatory and explanatory matter decorated with numerous colorful illustrations and illuminations.
Item Special Note
Each card has a print of one of the third grader's illuminated letters and message (you can check out the originals outside their classroom), for 24 in each set. This is one of only five available sets of postcards (measuring 4.5" x 5.5").
