Item Description
A true sWWII story fo Courage:
James Bradley's second book, Flyboys, is a gut-wrenching story of eight WWII American airmen. It chronicles their upbringing, family life and training through each man's demise on the island of Chichi Jima. Bradley excels as a biographer, distilling living accounts (both American and Japanese), correspondence, and primary documents (e.g., war crime trial transcripts) into a harrowing story of service, duty, conscience, and - sadly - depraved cruelty. Especially poignant is the relationship beteween one doomed flyer and two sympathetic Japanese captors. I very much liked the portions of the book focused on the young aviators and their Japanese counterparts
