Item Description
Lady in Red on porcelain plate with lustered rim. Artist: Karen Grubaugh of Art on Porcelain. Done in pen work, a tedious process by which the color is applied using fine nibs and fired to 1400 degrees, this piece is bordered in multi color lusters. Since its creation in 9th century Baghdad, the art of luster was a closely guarded secret. Not until the 18th century was the formula discovered by Meissen artists. Treasured above all art mediums by the Crown Heads of Europe as few as six pieces out of every 100 created would be considered acceptable. Few artisans mastered the difficult medium then and today there are few luster artists world wide.
