Item Description
This 100% woolen scarf is from Kinnaur (http://hpkinnaur.nic.in/), a stunningly beautiful and remote Himalayan area surrounded by very high mountains in the North of India.
The diamond weave of the scarf is romantically called chasm-e-bulbul (eye of the nightingale). The border is woven on the loom and shows a strong Central Asian influence. The five colors represent five elements; white for water, yellow for earth, red for fire, green for air and blue for ether.
This is a dying art as more and more girls go to school and no longer want to become weavers like their mothers, grandmothers, and great grandmothers. Sadly, they prefer machine-spun shawls and scarves as they are considered modern.
Item Special Note
Item must be picked up at ISTP's Cohn Campus.
