Item Description

Paul Nagano, Color Etching Aquatint, title 'In Jerusalem', unframed, total size 14" x 21½", impression size 12"; x 17½", pencil signed 99/180 on left bottom and artist signature on right bottom. Paul Nagano is a famous American water color artist originally from Bali and during the 60-70's worked at Pucker Safrai Gallery in Boston and created this etching after a trip (his first) to Jerusalem cut short by the war in May, 1967 using just a few slides and images of what he saw.

His hallmark is his ability to break up large masses of seemingly one color into minute interrelated areas of dazzling analogous harmonies. This etching-aquatint captures the rich but delicate light of Jerusalem. The Western Wall is seen surrounded by cypress trees, the massive Dome of the Rock and a palm tree. The gentle colors blend one into the other and yet the specific forms emerge.

This item was produced in limited edition and never sold to the public, but was given to selected donors of the Newton Solomon Schechter Day School's Scholarship Aid Book Ten.

Nagano's works are seen in Museum collections and on calendars depicting tropical nature. He splits his year between a studio in The Fenway and Bali.

The value of the piece is unknown because his works are usually private placements this is a one of a kind item.
