Item Description
Fresh to the market this smashing Cowan Pottery Bowl, probably from the early 1920's,measures 3-1/2" tall by 6" at the mouth and sports a beautiful high glaze of green and mustard. The interior rim has drypoint decoration. Impressed with die-stamp Cowan logo and COWAN.
Cowan Pottery, founded in Lakewood, Ohio in 1912 and moved to Rocky River in the 20's, became a national outlet of commercial pottery (see our Jardinieres at auction #464) and artist designed items. Artists associated with the pottery included Waylande Gregory, Viktor Schreckengost, Thelma Frazier Winter, Margaret Postgate, and Alexander Blazys.
This bowl, although without an artist signature, is clearly artist-made and bears a resemblance to a piece that sold for $750 at Cincinnati Art Galleries in 2005.
No chips, cracks, damage, or repair of any kind.
Visit the Cowan Pottery Musueum online for more information.
