Item Description

This striking portrait is an original linocut by Henri Matisse created in 1938. It is one of only 500 prints in the edition. The bold white lines are those carved away by the artist himself from a linoleum block, which is then rolled with ink and run through a press with a sheet paper. The resulting original print such as this is an exact mirror image of the block. The block includes the artists initials “HM” and the date “38” which are printed in the bottom left corner in reverse. Matisse was very fond of this particular media for its purity of line, and ability to capture the essence of his drawings. He wrote,” My line drawing is the purist and most direct translation of my emotion. The simplification of the medium allows that I can neither add or take anything away.” The sublime elegance he achieves in these few simple lines in only black and white make this an excellent example to have of one of the most important modern masters.
This work of art is custom framed in a contemporary black molding with gold trim, linen mat, matching gold fillet, and is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity from the Andrew Weiss Gallery, Beverly Hills.
