Item Description

Ben Yagoda's book, About Town, is about the history of the New Yorker Magazine, how it was conceived, developed and changed over time. Howard Ross, the founder and first editor of the magazine launched the magazine in the 1920's. The sophisticated and literary focus of the magazine soon captured the fancy of New Yorkers. During the depression the magazine gained subscribers as readers enjoyed the cartoons that helped them laugh at their troubles. Yagoda stated that the best years of the magazine came in the 1970's when writers like Woody Allen wrote wonderful articles and the journalists covered the scandals in Washington. He has made extensive use of The New Yorker's archives. About Town penetrates the inner working of The New Yorker as no other book has done, opening a window on a lost age. Autographed copy
