Item Description

Louise Nevelson was born in Russia in 1899; just six years later she was living in Maine with her family. Nevelson moved to New York in 1920 and joined the Art Students League there, where she became fascinated with the work of Marcel Duchamp. Her first solo show in took place in New York City in 1941. Thereafter, she began exhibiting her work at galleries all around the city. Nevelson's first solo show took place in 1941 at the Nierendorf Gallery in New York. In 1957, she made her first reliefs in shadow boxes as well as her first wall. Two years later, Nevelson participated in her first important museum exhibition, Sixteen Americans at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. She was included in the Venice Biennale in 1962. Her first major museum retrospective took place in 1967 at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York. She passed away in 1988 in New York.
