Item Description
Claire Darley has been a professor of art at University of Cincinnati's prestigious DAAP program since 1983. She received her BA in anthropology from Stanford University and her MFA in painting from the University of Iowa. The connection between anthropology and painting comes through clearly in her work. The Gardner, Self-Portrait with Dirt is a perfect example of this amalgamation. Here Darley has used the earth and its symbolism to express culture and its affect on an individual's person. Darley's painting has been shown in galleries in Cincinnati, New York City, West Virginia, Covington, Hawaii, Boston, Louisville, and the Ukraine. She has been the recipient of several awards, including two City of Cincinnati Arts Allocation Fund grants (2004-2006 and 1996-1997) and the Kentucky Foundation for Women grant in 1990. She has taken sabbatical travel to Peru, Ecuador, Japan, China and New Zealand.
