Item Special Note
"Left Behind" is about both aspects of the seen and unseen. The family is from the Gaza strip and the drawing portrays an actual event. One of their family members was a bombmaker that put together bombs for use by suicide bombers. However, on this particular day while putting together such a device it went off. You can imagine the result. The moment frozen in time is the result of the family receiving the news. To me, where a person lives or comes from, what color his or her skin may be or what his or her religious beliefs or lack of are, doesn't really matter. We are all the same race: "human." As such we all feel pain, just as any other living being does. Likewise we are capable of causing pain. In my heart I'm sure the bombmaker was aware of the pain his creation would cause. How ironic that it turned out to be the bombmaker's own family that was affected the greatest. When I saw the photo I felt I had to draw it, but pain was also my motivation for this piece. Pain that I have caused, felt and seen. Pain for all the families around the world. No matter if you strap on a bomb, place it by a roadside or building, or drop it from a plane, someone's family will feel the pain of your action. Will it ever stop? Most likely not, but it would be nice if it did."
