Item Description
The stylized and delicate motifs of birds and plants in the Appliqué Album quilt reminded the artist of Japanese family crests that she often uses in her fiber art. The design features nine realistic crests that have a bird motif and in most cases, are paired with a traditional botanical partner (e.g., sparrow with bamboo, geese with pampas grass, nightingale with plum blossom). She dyed the silk broadcloth using a traditional Japanese technique called katazome by applying rice paste resist to handcut paper stencils, and then stretched the cloth to apply traditional pigment dyes in a soy milk binder. Hand quilted. Dimensions: 41" square.
