Item Description

The personal conductor's study score (Boosey & Hawkes, Hawkes Pocket Scores) for Bela Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra--owned, used and annotated by one of the greatest conductors of the 20th century...Antal Dorati (1906-1988). This historical rarity is boldly autographed in ink on the frontispiece, and annotated inside in pencil, by Maestro Dorati himself. Known to Washingtonians as the music director who took the National Symphony Orchestra to new artistic heights in the 1970s, he was also the first NSO conductor under whose baton the Oratorio Society of Washington (today's Washington Chorus) regularly performed, beginning with "Il Retorno di Tobias" in the mid-'70s. Maestro Dorati's amazing career began with his appointment to the conductorship of the Royal Opera House of his native Budapest when he was only 18 years of age. His meteroic rise took him to music directorships of the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, American Ballet Theater, Dallas Symphony, Minneapolis Symphony, BBC Symphony, the NSO, Detroit Symphony and the Royal Philharmonic of Great Britain. He was knighted by the Queen of England for his contributions to world music.
