Victoria Woodhull in 1872 for-National Women's Rights Party, Lawyer Bella Lockwood in 1884 and 1888 for National Equal Rights Party, Senator Margaret Chase Smith in 1964 for the Republican Party, Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm in 1972 for the Democratic Party In 2016 Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton became the first women to be nominated by a major political party (Democratic) for the Presidency of the United States.
After the Presidential election in 2016 the National Women's History Alliance published FIRST WOMAN. The purpose of the magazine is to recognize the importance of the historic nomination of Hillary Clinton and to tell the stories and the history and tenacity of so many other women pioneering politicians and activists who worked g for equal rights. The rich political history included throughout FIRST WOMAN highlights some personalities, strategies, and art of the 72-year campaign to win the right to vote for women as well as celebrating their ongoing campaign for equality. FIRST WOMAN serves as a record of the tenacious courage and determination of women to participate EQUALLY in the work of creating a more perfect union.
