When the Speedway opened in 1909, the original track surface of crushed stone and tar proved too dangerous, so Carl Fisher had it resurfaced with 3.2 million paving bricks.

The bricks were supplied by five different Indiana-based manufacturers, and the specifications required the bricks to be nine inches long, four inches wide, and four inches deep, laid on their sides for durability.

The track was fully paved with asphalt by 1961, but a three-foot brick strip -- at the start/finish line -- remains, as does the speedway's nickname: the Brickyard.
