Item Description

Alley’s is the oldest business on Martha’s Vineyard, founded as S.M. Mayhew & Co in 1858, later known as Sanderson’s, Albion Alley & Co., and finally Alley’s. In the 1994 renovation, several floorboards were replaced, worn down by generations of sandy feet. You can own a piece of one of these floorboards! One side features an explanation of the piece’s origin, with dates. The other side features an ink sketch of Alley’s by an unidentified artist.

Distinguished West Tisbury resident and Choate English professor Hal Tinker wrote this about the store (then known as Sanderson’s): “Around the stove at Sanderson’s/The Past and Present meet./The gentle shadows of the past/Come in on quiet feet./They sit around on stool and keg,’ Grown man and gangling kid./And listen to the ageless yarns/Just as they always did.”

Item Special Note

Packing and Shipping charges will be added to the winning bid.
