oretta's thoughts on this year's artwork
This year, I revisited the Butler Preserve and spent a great deal of time walking the pathways throughout the Hope Cemetery Preserve. I was drawn to the walking lanes around the Wiggins Pond and the Scotchman’s Brook area.
The photos and drawings were taken from very early in the morning or late in the afternoons, always searching for the best light (avoiding the middle of the day, unless weather prohibited the favorite times).
Although I made a number of drawings, I took many photographs of where I would want to return after the light changed to draw or paint. The quiet, reflective visits where only sounds and movements of nature were my company made these visits and the task of creating artwork that would reflect the experiences per joy - in spite of the interruptions of rain and the changing natural light.
Nature was everywhere - a flock of wild turkeys crossing my path at the Butler Preserve or discovering some, for me, new unusual mushrooms - a large rich red mushroom the size of a Portabello, or a pure white flute mushroom that resembled an aperitif or martini glass. In the Wiggins Pond area, there were musical croaking frogs doing duets that could not be seen or drawn, but that made their presence known.
Enjoy my experiences!
