This stunning shot captures the beauty of this historically protected landmark off the central coast of California near San Luis Obispo. Formed by a volcanic plug, this rock formation is the tallest of 9 and serves for centuries as a navigational aid for mariners.
Today, Rock Island is a Peregrine Falcon preserve and the rock cannot be climbed, but there are walking paths around the base.
