Item Description
Carlyle and Emerson: Their Long Debate, by Kenneth Marc Harris. Harvard University Press, 1978. From the dust jacket: "While the scholarship on Carlyle and Emerson is extensive for each, little attention has been paid to their relationship. This book offers an extended essay on the meaning and continuing significance of their three meetings and their correspondence that spanned thirty-eight years, from 1834 to 1872. Taken together, the two men epitomize the spiritual crisis for the nineteeth century: namely, how to adjust to the gradual removal of conventional religion from the center of one's being and what to put in that religion's place that will serve as well. Since their deaths, the crisis has not been resolved so much as it has been deepened." This hardcover copy is in good condition. The book cover and the book edges show a bit of age. The dust jacet edges and spine are more aged yet are intact.
