About Grant Cottage
Grant Cottage is a NYS Historic Site and National Historic Landmark located just outside of Saratoga Springs, NY. Grant was the commanding general who led the Union Armies to victory during the Civil War, and was elected 18th President of the United States. Impoverished by a Ponzi scheme and dying of throat cancer, the General was in a race against time to complete his memoirs to provide financial security for his beloved family. He came to the mountain for its cool clean air in June 1885. Battling pain, weakness and time, he fought against death to finish his writing. On July 23, 1885, just three days after the books were completed, Grant passed away in the cottage surrounded by his family. A small funeral took place at the cottage on August 4. The cottage has been preserved since then, with the flowers from that funeral and personal items on display, just as they were 138 years ago. His acclaimed memoirs have never been out of print and are considered the gold standard in the historical or presidential genre.
Also included: a copy of Grant's Annotated Memoirs by West Point English professor Elizabeth Samet (a $45.00 value) and a Grant Cottage baseball cap (valued at $15.00). Photos below
