Item Description

Rev. June Cooper, an African-American theologian with deep knowledge of African-American history, will be our guide for a thought-provoking walking tour of Black History and the role of the Protestant Church in Boston.

Join us as we walk from Old South Church to Trinity Church and learn how Biblical stories about slavery began to be interpreted. Hear about the role of power and politics of slavery that split denominations and gave way to compromise and complicity. We will also visit the Embrace statue and the landing place of Phyllis Wheatley, the first African-American published female writer and poet in Boston, and learn about her journey from being an enslaved person to being freed.

The tour will end back at Old South Church. There may be an opportunity for further discussion over lunch if the participants would like to do that.

Item Special Note

This Walking Tour will be held in the Spring of 2024 on a date, as yet undecided,  that is convenient for all participants. If the date turns out not to be convenient for the winner of this Auction item, the money paid will be refunded.

The cost of lunch is not included in this Auction item.
