Item Description
6 1/2" x 9 3/4" print, 12" x 14" matted
This item is a mixed media painting on paper by local artist Liedeke Bulder. It depicts semi-transparent orchid flowers ascending from the mother plant. The ghostly flowers are presented over a sooty background wash, giving the work a rather somber aspect. A considerable amount of detail, especially in the flowers, is evident throughout the piece.
The painting measures 6 1/2" x 9 3/4", with overall matted dimensions of 12" x 14".
Bulder won the Margo Latif Memorial Award at the 2023 Art Kaua'i exhibit for her work "Sacred Fire".
Born and raised a stone's throw from the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, Liedeke is best known in the Hawaiian islands for her paintings of orchids, fragile yet fierce and elegant.
She works in mixed media on paper, canvas, and wood, applying in delicate washes her signature addition of bistre, the European Old Master pigment made from soot, thereby creating haunting memento mori, symbols of dying and rising. When working on wood, she pays close attention to the grain and lets a textural process unfold in oils, acrylics, ink, and pencil.
"Art for me is about making order out of the chaos of our human condition," she says. Bulder has been shaped by her Dutch roots and her meditation practice. She is inspired by nature always, finding metaphors for our human journeys everywhere but especially in her secret, backyard garden and her daily ocean views from her upcountry Kauai location.
