Item Description
This unique, sturdy, one-of-a-kind, 42-inch walking stick was skillfully crafted by Dave Reando, an 88 Shrines volunteer, from the golden bamboo growing next to the Hall of Compassion at the Lawai International Center. The hand caps are crafted from lowland Koa or Koaia with a star design. Accenting the walking stick are two Glass Lampwork Beads created in Dave Reando’s Kalaheo studio. Crafting Lampwork Beads has been a passion for Dave for almost 20 years, especially during the cold winter months Dave used to spend in southern Illinois in the past.
The dark and light Hawaiian design in the Lokahi Triangle represent:
Unity, agreement or accord
The literal definition of Lokahi is unity, agreement or accord. In traditional Hawaiian healing, the Lokahi Triangle is about achieving harmony in three areas: mentally, physically and spiritually.
The 3 long markings are Spear heads, Waves, and the third is a design found on a man on Kauai around 1906. The meaning in the Hawaiian hieroglyphs make this special walking stick more than just a walking stick but a spiritual, functional work of art.
