Item Description
This item is an original gyotaku (fish print) by craftsman Ray Nitta. Traditionally, Japanese fisherman would record the type/size of some of their catch by printing the fish on washi (Japanese paper) but this practice later evolved into an art form. Ideally, a rare fish would be caught, the fish would be printed on paper thereby creating art, and the catch would then be enjoyed for dinner.
While fishing at Salt Pond, Ray was surprised to hook a flounder (Pak'i'i) and he preserved the experience using the gyotaku method. A fish print preserves the exact size of the fish so even though Ray would have liked to tell a tale that the catch was twice as big, the gyotaku keeps him humble. The fish was printed using black sumie ink and the beautiful blue coloring of the background was added, bringing the fish to life. This piece measures 15 1/2" x 24 1/2". Printed on rice paper and mounted on foamcore board.
Ray Nitta is an indespensible part of the 88 Shrines ohana and contributes so much in so many areas. He is currently working on the design for a bell tower to add to the site of the Hall of Compassion.
