Item Description

This item is a donated original woodblock print by the Japanese artist Shiro Kasamatsu. The monochrome image appears to depict a late-Fall scene with bare desiduous trees in the fore- and back-ground, and a harvested field in the near distance. A ghostly while neko (cat) steathily stalks its dinner in the field. The graded sky gives us the time of day - twilight.

Shiro Kasamatsu (1898-1991) was one of the foremost woodblock artists of his time and was trained in the Shin Hanga (New Prints) and Sosaku Hanga (Creative Prints) styles of woodblock printing.

This limited edition woodblock print (59/100) was printed on washi (traditional Japanese paper) and measures 11 1/4" x 16". The matted size is 13" x 19". It has been signed, stamped and dated 1956, and the title and publisher's mark can be seen in the margin. The print was obtained from Watanabe's Woodblock Prints in Tokyo circa 1960's or 1970's.
