PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Student lessons are tailored to the level of the group and focus on the fundamentals of chess, pattern recognition with checkmate puzzles and tactics, learning and implementing the basic principles of chess in the openings and basic endgame techniques. We will guide students in formulating plans and inspire them to think creatively and out of the box. Students will explore different perspectives and ideas through chess analysis.
COURSE DESCRIPTIONS: The Tuesday Beginner to Advance Beginner classes is best suited for scholars who either are newer to chess or chess instruction (Beginners - Advanced Beginners). Students who have had less than a full year of chess with Intelligent Minds Chess will fit well in this course. Students who know how the pieces move but are still new to strategy will also do well in this course. The Multi-level Thursday class is best suited for scholars who are advanced beginners (or older beginners) to Intermediate and Advanced players. The Multi-level Friday class is best suited for scholars who are Intermediate to Advanced players. Advanced Beginners are sometimes suitable to join but should seek approval if interested.
Intelligent Minds Chess is run by Adia Onyango, a Nationally Certified FIDE Instructor who has been coaching chess for over 15 years with schools around NYC. Coach Onyango has a BA in psychology from Vassar College, a Masters from SUNY at Buffalo, and all but her dissertation defended towards her Ph.D. in child clinical psychology. In addition to coaching Onyango competes nationally and internationally, and stands among the top 100 women in the US.
