Item Description
Contemporary Indian artist Sumana Chowdhury works across oil, acrylic, and watercolor. Raised in Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh, she developed a deep appreciation for the surrounding forests and nature at a young age. Her art reveals a prevailing interest in organic textures, from human anatomy to the ocean, as well as an interest in exploring the inner mind.
In her original series “Seascapes,” Sumana Chowdhury focuses on the mesmerizing waves of the ocean, interpreting water as a source of calm and comfort. “It is said that each drop makes an ocean. My paintings can be compared to an ocean of thoughts, with the flow of thoughts being represented by a flow of pigments onto my canvas. My painting process is a meditation,” she explains. Each wave is made up of dozens of brushstrokes, but together they form powerful currents. These blue and turquoise waves are also tinged with red or gold as if reflecting light from the sun. Without the presence of a horizon or shore on the canvas, the viewer contemplates the vast unknown of the ocean.
Sumana Chowdhury completed her BFA and MFA at the acclaimed art school Kala Bhavan at Vishwabharati University, Santiniketan before spending a year studying abroad in England. She has exhibited nationally and internationally, including in New York City and London.
Chowdhury is represented by Laasya Art Gallery in Palo Alto featuring contemporary, modern, and traditional Indian Art founded by WSP parent Sonai Nayyar Patwardhan.
