Item Description
Psittacus erithacus, 2019, unique hand-printed platinotype on archival rag, custom white frame, float mounted, museum glass 22 3/8 in x 26 7/16 in. Edition 4/5.
"Psittacus erithacus" is a platinotype created by using a photographic printing process from the late 19th century using a mixture of noble metals salts, platinum and palladium. Platinotypes are unrivalled in photographic printing processes because of their rich tonal range and luminosity. Christine Fitzgerald is international recognized for her photographic and printing skills using historical photographic process and is one of the few artists in Canada that uses platinum printing to create artworks. Library and Archives Canada recently acquired five large platinotype prints from another series created by Fitzgerald for its permanent collection.
"Psittacus erithacus" is part of the photographic series CAPTIVE which reflects both the struggle and resilience of captive parrots. The work is a meditation on themes surrounding the often conflicted and tenuous relationship between humans and the natural world and our fascination with the exotic. The series was showcased in solo exhibitions in Ottawa (2019) and Toronto (2022) and was featured by the CBC in 2019 ("She has taken a series of truly beautiful and noble portraits of parrots…The results are spectacular…you can almost look into the souls of these parrots"). Selected images from the series were featured by All About Photos Magazine with one on its cover in 2022.
