Item Description

FIERCE TIGER by HORIE GYOKUHO, donated by Boris Shekunov This is the Year of the Tiger - Auspicious for a Strong Marriage! Original hand-painted Japanese hanging scroll on silk, with original signed and titled paulownia (kiri) box, certificate of authenticity, in excellent condition. Horie-san was born in Kano, Gifu city in 1917. He studied under a well-known Japanese painter Tamaki Raiseki (1899-1978) and served as a director of the Toyama Japanese Animal Painting Association. His paintings of tigers have always been very popular in Japan with their dream-like quality of a steamy jungle. This is a fine work of great expression, realism, and attention to the details.
