Southwest Stories Tales from the Desert by various authors
"This collection beautifully combines prose, poetry, letters, and legends from writers as diverse as Larry McMurtry, John Muir, Sandra Cisneros, Henry Miller, Georgia O'Keeffe, Edward Abbey, and Barbara Kingsolver. Some of the pieces convey a sense of the breathtaking landscapes and geographic formations or of the stiflingly hot, red clay-filled winds; others convey a sense of the idiosyncratic and rebellious nature of the inhabitants or of people passing through these lands. Some do both. Walter Noble Burns sweeps the reader right into the action as he describes the Earps and the McClantons preparing to shoot it out at the O.K. Corral. Leslie Marmon Silko tells of the fraying bonds among Pueblo Indians as outsiders and outside customs intrude. The stories are all strong in themselves, but their juxtaposition forms a delectable, deeply satisfying, memorable collection that can be read over and over with pleasure. Recommended for all public libraries."
- Lisa Nussbaum, Euclid P.L., Ohio.
