Item Description
As the author notes, "A View from the Hill: A History of Humboldt State University is an attempt to record a social memory for former students, faculty, staff, and, administrators. This volume is not meant to be a comprehensive institutional history. Thus, the reader will discover an emphasis on the people of Humboldt State."
But the reward comes from the plentiful and exquisite photographs, some dating from the turn of the 20th century, of Arcata, Humboldt Bay, students and faculty from the earliest years (1910). The narrative is more like a yearbook than standard text, humorous, warm and broken up by local events and prominent locals, while covering the impact of the two world wars, the post-war boom and the transformation of the area--and the country--thereafter. An excellent way to learn of the evolution of an institution, an area and a people close to home.
