This book is of special interest to those studying fish biomechanics, functional morphology, behavior and ecology. It focuses on the mechanical aspects of fish locomotion and its main purpose to survey and review some of the more important aspects of the field.

It begins by outlining some basic concepts in fluid dynamics (e.g. continuity and Bernoulli's theorem, boundary layer theory, lift and drag) that are central to an understanding of fish swimming and then goes on to consider the relevant mechanical properties of swimming muscle. Next, speed and size are discussed in relation to power requirements and drag and drag-reduction mechanisms are considered with emphasis on the possible role of morphological adaptations (e.g. keels and finlets) in controlling flow about the fish. Various undulatory swimming modes are identified and described and a basic distinction is made between steady and unsteady swimming. The kinematics and hydromechanics of both are considered in relation to the morphology and mode of life of the fish concerned. A similar approach is taken in describing median and paired fin propulsion. A discussion of the stability and control follows and centers on the equilibrium of sharks and scombriods. Some of the most interesting developments in fish locomotion research to occur over the course of the past five years or so have been concerned with what are known as 'swimming strategies'. The enegetics of a variety of swimming strategies (e.g. intermittent swimming, tidal stream transport, porpoising) are considered for neutrally and negatively buoyant fish. Finally, a series of miscellaneous issues (e.g. larval fish swimming, flying fish) is considered.
