Item Description

Bay Laurel Room (Maha Kali and Aubrie's Lower Elementary Class)

"The child must live in an environment of beauty" wrote Maria Montessori, asking teachers and parents to strive to create mindful, beautiful spaces that empower children.

Color within the learning environment has the power to change the way we feel and grow. Inspired by the vivid colors and patterns of Ghanaian Kente cloth as well as the symbols those colors represent, the Bay Laurel students collaborated to identify their values as a classroom and paired them with color, imbuing each color in this artwork with its own unique meaning - Joy: Yellow, Knowledge and Study: Green, Teamwork: Red, Responsibility: Blue, and Respect: Black. The students then block-printed strips of canvas and wove them together to represent the strength of the Bay Laurel classroom community, made up of strong individuals who come together to work as one. The fabric is mounted on a wooden stretcher to be hung as an artwork.

Woven canvas strips and screen-printing ink mounted on birch stretcher

size: 4' x 4' feet
