The Sinatra Swing is a concert (conducted by Christopher Lee and the Portland Symphony Orchestra) featuring standards made wildly popular by the great male nightclub singers of the 1950s — Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Bobby Darin and many others. The Portland Symphony Orchestra (PSO) was established in 1923 and its mission statement is to “serve our community by enriching lives through music.” It was started by a group of leading Portland musicians who sent invitations to other musicians to join them. Initially they called themselves the Amateur Strand Symphony Orchestra and had their first rehearsal with 75 instrumentalists. In 1969, the name was changed to Portland Symphony Orchestra and the group currently consists of 82 professional musicians (40% of whom are Maine residents while the rest are from the greater Boston area, New Hampshire and Vermont). Eckart Preu is the PSO's new music director for the 2019-20 season. He's had a stellar career with performances at Carnegie Hall, the Sorbonne in Paris, a live broadcast with the Jerusalem Symphony, and he's collaborated with collaborated with renowned soloists such as Sarah Chang, Anne Akiko Meyers, Jean-Phillipe Collard, Vladimir Feltsman, Horacio Gutierrez, Leila Josefowicz, Louis Lortie, and Richard Stoltzman.
