Item Description
Join Julia Blaut, Curator at the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation, for a tour and pre-dinner wine and cheese, at the artist's former home and studio. A leading artist of the 20th century, Rauschenberg was known in the mid-1950s as the "enfant-terrible" of the New York avant-garde. His celebrated work challenged sanctioned divisions between painting and sculpture and exemplified his belief that "painting relates to both art and life." In a prolific career that spanned more than sixty years, Rauschenberg has been called a forerunner of essentially every postwar movement since Abstract Expressionism while remaining independent of any particular affiliation. Today the foundation works to foster the artist's legacy by increasing public access to and scholarship of Rauschenberg's artwork; cultivating emerging and established artists through a residency program; and through philanthropic initiatives that connect art, culture, and creativity with important social issues.
The building which now houses the artist's Foundation is located down the street from ICE at 381 Lafayette Street, at the corner of Great Jones Street.
