Item Description
Modern parrot mola design of applique on a black background, made by the Kuna people of the San Blas Islands of Panama. One side of the piece is open to insert a pillow form or can be used as a wall hanging. Measures 17" x 17".
Mola is the word for "clothing" in the Kuna language of the Kuna people living off the northern coast of Panama on the San Blas islands. Molas are incorporated into a woman's clothing, usually with one panel on the front of the blouse and a matching or related one on the back.
Molas are handmade using a reverse appliqué technique. Several layers (usually two to seven) of different-colored cloth (usually cotton) are sewn together; the design is then formed by cutting away parts of each layer. The edges of the layers are then turned under and sewn down.
