WineTasting.org and its founder, wine expert and PBS television host Mark Phillips, enlighten budding sommeliers on the intricacies of grownup grape juices during informative classes. Pairs of enophiles head to WineTasting.org's offices for 90-minute seminars, during which Phillips taps into his reserve of knowledge and giant grapes to educate guests on wine fundamentals. Attendees gain valuable vino insight such as how to get wine to the right temperature, the differences between glass types, and when it's OK to drop ice cubes into glasses of white. The skilled instructor approaches each lecture with a comedic, nonsnobby attitude, ensuring that patrons can easily bolster their knowledge of the subject without having to bribe wine-bar waiters.
After the lesson, students can grab a well-stocked wine kit for home studying and merrymaking. Two dishwasher-safe glasses, designed by Phillips, cradle beverages in hand-blown crystal, while three wine-slushy mixes—chosen at random—enlist white wine and water to turn flavored powders into icy frozen drinks such as mojitos, strawberry daiquiris, or margaritas. Like the best stuffed animals, the included wineglass holder fits around customers' necks and positions chalices in a cushy, chest-level pouch, alleviating hands of strenuous grasping duties. A six-month subscription to The Savvy Host further tests customers' newfound culinary awareness with recipes, cooking-demonstration videos, and appropriate wine pairings for different meals emailed to cyber-students each month.
