Item Description
How could one little nondescript man so capture the lives of respectable, respected, small town people, and influence them to behave in a manner undreamed of prior to meeting this self-styled prophet? The whole movement lasted only 3 years (1903-1906), with the leader being in prison for almost half the time, but the explosive violence which marked the end and its permanent effect on so many lives, keeps the Holy Roller cult from being written off as just another oddity of small town repression. The very ordinariness of the people and the setting itself, the rural town of Corvallis, Oregon, became a backdrop against which a drama was enacted which attracted attention all over the world at the time, and which may never be completely understood.
