From the artist:
"This bowl was turned from a beautiful piece of maple that was rescued from a pile of firewood. The coloring and black striations result from an invasive fungal infection of the wood. When two different fungal species collide, they protect their colony by walling themselves off. After the tree is harvested and the wood is dried, the fungi die, leaving this beautiful figuring that is highly prized among woodworkers.
This piece reminds me that perfect, unblemished pieces of wood are just less interesting. And so it is with us. It is the challenges we face and overcome that give us character. This discarded piece of firewoood had within it the potential to become this beautiful bowl. We just had to recognize it, form it, carve and polish it so that everyone else could see that beauty, too!"
Finished with linseed oil and beeswax. Food safe.
